Weimaraner
The Weimaraner is an athletic German gundog developed during the early nineteenth century at the grand ducal court of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
Grand Duke Karl August and noble foresters originally bred the dog to track big game including bears, cougars, stags, and wild boars across central European forests. As large game populations diminished throughout the nineteenth century, handlers redirected the breed toward hunting game birds, pointing, and water retrieving. German breed clubs established rigorous registry standards in 1897 to protect hunting performance and working conformation. The breed reached international sportsmen during the 1930s, gaining full American Kennel Club recognition in 1943.
The Federation Cynologique Internationale assigns the breed to Group 7, Pointing Dogs. Males stand 61-69 cm (24-27 in) at the withers and weigh 30-40 kg (66-88 lb), while females stand 56-64 cm (22-25 in) and weigh 25-35 kg (55-77 lb). The primary coat variety is short, sleek, and smooth, displaying shades of silver-grey, mouse-grey, or roe-grey alongside distinctive light amber or blue-grey eyes. Official standards describe the breed as fearless, friendly, obedient, alert, and deeply devoted to handling partners.
Maintaining the short coat requires regular weekly brushing and checking the webbed paws after swimming or woodland outings. The breed demands extensive daily exercise, mental stimulation, and tracking tasks to channel its deep-seated working instincts. Major health predispositions include gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), hip dysplasia, spinal dysraphism, hypomyelination, and factor VIII deficiency. Breeders routinely conduct hip radiographic screenings and ocular examinations to ensure sound breeding stock.
