Great Dane
The Great Dane is a giant guardian and hunting dog originating from Germany.
Ancestors of the breed include medieval boar-hunting hounds known as Saurueden and heavy mastiffs crossed with fleet greyhounds during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. German nobility maintained these massive dogs inside ancestral residences as chamber dogs and bodyguard protectors. In 1878, a committee in Berlin unified regional variants such as the Ulmer Dogge under the collective name Deutsche Dogge. A detailed standard followed in 1880, and the Deutscher Doggen-Club formalized uniform breeding protocols across German kennels by 1888.
Assigned to the FCI Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain and Cattledogs group, the animal exhibits a statuesque, noble build. Males stand at least 80 cm (31.5 in) at the withers and females at least 72 cm (28.5 in); adult males typically weigh 64-79 kg (140-175 lb) and females 50-64 kg (110-140 lb). The short, dense coat lies sleek and flat, appearing in fawn, brindle, harlequin, black, and blue. The breed standard characterizes its temperament as friendly, docile, devoted, confident, and fearless toward provocations.
Coat maintenance involves weekly brushing with a soft bristle brush or grooming glove to clear shed hairs. Moderate daily exercise on level ground preserves muscle tone without straining immature bones, while elevated feeding and resting after meals help mitigate acute bloat risks. Major health conditions include gastric dilatation-volvulus, dilated cardiomyopathy, osteosarcoma, and hip dysplasia. Careful monitoring of rapid juvenile growth rates and regular veterinary cardiac evaluations protect long-term orthopedic and circulatory stability.
