Dobermann
The Dobermann is an athletic protection breed developed in Thuringia, Germany, around 1890.
Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a local tax collector and municipal animal control warden in Apolda, bred alert working dogs to accompany him through dangerous routes. He crossed ancestral butcher dogs resembling primitive Rottweilers with German Pinschers, Black and Tan Terriers, and Beauceron herders. Otto Goeller and other local breeders refined the strain following Dobermann's death in 1894, establishing the first National Dobermann Club in 1899. German authorities formally designated the variety as an official police dog by the opening decade of the twentieth century.
Positioned in the FCI Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain and Cattledogs group, the Dobermann exhibits an elegant, square body conformation. Males measure 68-72 cm (27-28.5 in) at the withers and weigh 40-45 kg (88-99 lb), whereas females stand 63-68 cm (25-27 in) and weigh 32-35 kg (71-77 lb). The smooth, hard, short coat lies tight to the skin with no undercoat, colored black or brown with demarcated rust-red markings. Official standards describe its demeanor as courageous, alert, self-assured, trainable, and devoted.
Grooming involves occasional wipe-downs with a damp cloth or curry comb to remove dander and loose hairs. Consistent cardiovascular exercise, tracking drills, and advanced obedience training satisfy high cognitive demands and canalize natural guarding drives. Common clinical concerns include dilated cardiomyopathy, von Willebrand disease, cervical vertebral instability, and hip dysplasia. Diagnostic testing for clotting deficiencies, cardiac ultrasound screenings, and sensible joint management protect health across all life stages.
