Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is a compact toy spitz breed originating in the historical Pomerania region of north-western Poland and north-eastern Germany.
Ancestral lineage traces to arctic sled dogs and stone-age peat dogs known collectively across Central Europe as the German Spitz. British monarchs popularized the breed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Queen Charlotte brought pairs to England in 1761, and her granddaughter Queen Victoria established an influential breeding kennel in 1888, reducing the working dogs down to diminutive lapdog dimensions. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale classifies the Pomeranian as the Zwergspitz variety under Group 5 among European spitz breeds, while British and American kennel registries treat it as an independent toy breed.
The physical profile displays a compact, square silhouette with a wedge-shaped head, dark oval eyes, and small erect ears. Height at the withers ranges from 18-24 cm (7-9 in), with mature adult weight typically running between 1.8-2.5 kg (4-6 lb). A luxuriant double coat features a short, dense undercoat beneath a long, straight, stand-off outer coat forming a prominent neck ruff and feathered tail arched over the back. Accepted coloration spans orange, black, brown, white, cream, and sable patterns.
The breed standard defines the dog as watchful, lively, cheerful, and deeply attached to its owner, showing neither timidity nor aggression. Daily interactive play and brief outdoor walks fulfill its moderate exercise requirements. Thorough brushing two or three times weekly prevents undercoat matting and manages regular shedding. Primary hereditary health issues include patellar luxation, collapsing trachea, early periodontal dental disease, and alopecia X, an endocrine disorder causing progressive symmetrical hair loss.
