Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is a compact, wire-haired terrier-type breed developed in south-western Germany during the late nineteenth century.

Bred around Frankfurt by crossing the Standard Schnauzer with smaller breeds like the Affenpinscher and Miniature Pinscher, farmers employed the dog as an agile barnyard ratter and vigilant farm watchdog. The Pinscher-Schnauzer-Klub established breed stud records in Germany in 1895. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale catalogues the variety under Group 2 alongside Pinscher and Schnauzer types. While British and European registries place it in utility and working companion groups, the American Kennel Club classifies it in the Terrier Group due to its historical quarry-hunting role.

The physical profile displays a square, sturdy build measuring 30-35 cm (12-14 in) in height at the withers, with adult weight spanning 4.5-8 kg (10-18 lb). Distinct facial furnishing highlights include a dense bristly beard and bushy overhanging eyebrows shading dark oval eyes. A double coat consists of a dense undercoat beneath a harsh, wiry outer jacket. Recognized standard colour variations include pure black, pepper and salt, black and silver, and pure white with a matching white undercoat.

Breed standards describe its temperament as intelligent, fearless, watchful, and obedient, possessing reliable trainability without showing malicious aggression. Moderate daily exercise, structured walking, and mental enrichment keep its keen hunting instincts balanced. Regular grooming requires weekly combing of leg furnishings and hand-stripping or clipping every six to eight weeks. Health management focuses on hereditary risks such as hyperlipidemia, acute pancreatitis, calcium oxalate urolithiasis, progressive retinal atrophy, and persistent pupillary membranes.
