Boxer
The Boxer is a muscular, short-coated working breed created in Germany during the late nineteenth century.
Originating from the heavier Brabant Bullenbeisser hunting dogs crossed with English bulldogs, the breed took shape in Munich where the Deutscher Boxer Club established the initial standard in 1895. Early handlers employed Boxers for hunting large game like wild boar and stag, and their physical endurance later made them one of the first breeds enlisted for military duties and police patrol work in Europe. The breed is registered within FCI Group 2, under Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid breeds, and Swiss Mountain and Cattledogs.
Males stand 57 to 63 centimeters (22 to 25 inches) tall and weigh over 30 kilograms (65 to 70 pounds), while females measure 53 to 59 centimeters (21 to 23 inches) and weigh around 25 kilograms (55 pounds). Distinctive physical traits include a square profile, strong musculature, and an undershot jaw with a dark muzzle mask. The coat is short, hard, smooth, and tight-fitting, appearing in fawn or brindle variations. The breed standard characterizes the Boxer as self-assured, fearless, equable, and devoted to family, retaining natural protective instincts alongside playfulness.
Boxers need vigorous daily activity to maintain tone and relieve energy, alongside basic weekly brushing with a rubber curry comb. Because they are moderately brachycephalic, rigorous activity in high temperatures must be regulated. Health concerns affecting the breed include boxer cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and mast cell tumors.
