Dachshund
The Dachshund is a German hunting hound breed developed in Central Europe during the Middle Ages to pursue badgers into underground dens. Known in its native language as the Dackel or Teckel, the breed belongs to Group 4 in the Fédération Cynologique Internationale classification. Breeders established the Deutscher Teckelklub in Germany in 1888, following centuries of selective breeding from medieval tracking hounds called Bracken.
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale categorizes the breed into three sizes determined by chest circumference measured after fifteen months of age: Standard, Miniature, and Rabbit Dachshund. In standard specimens, chest circumference spans 37 to 47 centimeters (15 to 18 inches) in males and 35 to 45 centimeters (14 to 18 inches) in females, with typical adult weights between seven and twelve kilograms (15 to 26 pounds). Miniature varieties measure 30 to 37 centimeters (12 to 15 inches) around the chest, whereas rabbit varieties measure between 25 and 32 centimeters (10 to 13 inches). The anatomical build features an elongated torso with short, muscular limbs, maintaining ground clearance equal to roughly one third of withers height.
The breed appears in three distinct coat types: smooth-haired, wire-haired, and long-haired. Smooth coats are short, dense, and glossy; wire coats feature harsh outer hair with an undercoat, prominent eyebrows, and a chin beard; long coats are soft, sleek, and adorned with feathering on the ears, limbs, and tail. Permissible colorations include monochrome red, bicolor black or brown with tan markings, and dappled patterns. The official standard defines the temperament as friendly, confident, and even-tempered, displaying persistent hunting passion, courage without aggression, and an acute olfactory sense during underground and blood-tracking tasks.
The elongated spinal column combined with short legs exposes the dog to intervertebral disc disease, making dietary control and the avoidance of stairs essential for spinal preservation. Progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, and dental crowding also affect certain bloodlines. Grooming demands depend on coat variety: wire-haired coats require periodic hand stripping to remove dead hair, long-haired individuals need thorough weekly brushing to prevent mats, and smooth coats need only occasional rubbing with a damp towel. Regular moderate outdoor walks satisfy exercise needs while keeping lumbar musculature toned without overstressing joint cartilages.
