Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is an agile, muscular terrier developed in nineteenth-century England for athletic quarry and working-class companionship.

Breed origins center on the industrial Black Country and Staffordshire regions around the 1830s. Breeders crossed the Old English Bulldog with various working terriers to create a compact, determined animal combining strength and speed. Following the legal prohibition of blood sports under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1835, miners and ironworkers refined the breed into a domestic house dog noted for human compatibility. The Kennel Club granted formal pedigree recognition in June 1935, and the first club championship show occurred shortly afterward in 1936.

Under the Federation Cynologique Internationale, the breed sits in Group 3, Terriers. Desirable height at withers spans 36-41 cm (14-16 in) for both sexes. Male weights range between 13-17 kg (28-38 lb), while females weigh 11-15.4 kg (24-34 lb). The coat is short, smooth, and tight to the skin, appearing in solid red, fawn, white, black, blue, or any brindle variation, with or without white markings. The official standard highlights bold courage, high intelligence, tenacity, and an affectionate, reliable nature toward family members and children.

Coat maintenance requires minimal effort, needing only weekly brushing with a rubber mitt and occasional baths. Daily physical exertion, scent games, and structured obedience outlets keep their muscular frame fit. Known health concerns include hereditary cataracts, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, hip dysplasia, and L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria, an inherited metabolic disorder detected via specialized genetic testing.
