Border Collie
The Border Collie is an agile, medium-sized working sheepdog developed along the border country of England and Scotland.
Shepherds in the Anglo-Scottish border region spent generations selecting dogs for silent gathering methods and an intense optical stare known as the eye. The modern bloodline traces directly to Old Hemp, a tricolour stud dog born in Northumberland in September 1893 who sired prominent working offspring. James Reid coined the name Border Collie in 1915 while serving as secretary of the International Sheep Dog Society. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale categorises the dog in Group 1 alongside other Continental Sheepdogs.
Adult males reach an ideal withers height of 53 centimetres (21 inches), while females measure slightly less, with typical adult weights ranging from 12 to 25 kilograms (26 to 55 pounds). The breed presents two coat varieties, consisting of a smooth exterior or a moderately long topcoat with feathering along the legs, both supported by a weather-resistant undercoat. Standards permit numerous colours, such as black, blue, slate, red, and merle patterns, provided white does not predominate. The standard describes an alert, tenacious, highly tractile worker displaying sharp intelligence without nervousness.
Managing a Border Collie requires daily physical exercise alongside demanding mental tasks to satisfy high working drive. The dense double coat sheds seasonally and demands weekly brushing to remove dead fur. Hereditary health considerations encompass hip dysplasia, collie eye anomaly, neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, and sensory neuropathy, prompting kennel clubs to mandate genetic screenings and hearing evaluations before breeding.
