Bulldog
The Bulldog is a smooth-coated, heavy-set companion dog developed in Great Britain during the seventeenth century.
Historical records first mention the breed under this name in the 1630s, when handlers deployed it in the blood sport of bullbaiting. After the British Parliament banned baiting sports through the Cruelty to Animals Act 1835, breeders shifted their focus away from aggression toward a calmer disposition suited to home companionship. The breed entered competitive exhibition at Birmingham dog shows in 1860, and enthusiasts established the first dedicated breed club in 1875. In the Fédération Cynologique Internationale nomenclature, the Bulldog belongs to Group 2, classified under Molossoid breeds of the Mastiff type.
The standard specifies an ideal weight of 25 kilograms (55 pounds) for adult males and 23 kilograms (51 pounds) for adult females. Specimens possess a broad, low-slung frame with stout forelegs, a wide chest, and a relatively short head distinguished by an upturned lower jaw and open nostrils. The coat is short, flat, and fine in texture, presenting in brindle, piebald, fawn, red, or pure white. Under the FCI standard, the dog exhibits a courageous, bold, and dependable disposition, masking a mild and affectionate temper beneath an imposing exterior.
Maintaining skin hygiene requires regular cleaning between facial folds to prevent moisture-induced dermatitis. Due to its brachycephalic skull anatomy, the Bulldog faces risks of upper airway obstruction, heat intolerance, and respiratory distress, which necessitates moderate daily exercise rather than strenuous exertion in warm climates. Veterinary screening guidelines also recommend monitoring for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and hyperuricosuria.
