Bull Terrier

The Bull Terrier is a robust, distinctively head-shaped terrier bred in the United Kingdom during the early nineteenth century.

Early breeders originally crossed Bulldogs with now-extinct White English Terriers to create pit-fighting animals known as bull-and-terriers. In the 1850s and 1860s, Birmingham dealer James Hinks refined the cross into an all-white gentleman's companion, smoothing contours and shaping the signature oval profile. Hinks exhibited his standard type at the Birmingham Dog Show in 1862, and the Bull Terrier Club formed in 1887 to maintain the studbook. It is classified under FCI Group 3 in the Terriers section.

The standard specifies no strict height or weight limits, demanding maximum substance for size, with typical individuals weighing 22 to 38 kilograms (50 to 70 pounds) at roughly 45 to 55 centimeters (18 to 22 inches) in height. Its hallmark is an unbroken down-faced egg-shaped head devoid of stop, alongside small triangular dark eyes and erect ears. The coat is short, glossy, harsh, and flat, seen in pure white or colored variations like brindle, black brindle, red, fawn, and tricolor. Standards specify a courageous, fun-loving, disciplined temperament that is amenable and deeply attached to humans.

Care routines are straightforward, needing weekly grooming with a hound glove to shed dead hair. Energy levels are high, requiring regular physical exercise and interactive play. Hereditary health vulnerabilities encompass hereditary nephritis, polycystic kidney disease, mitral dysplasia, deafness in white specimens, and patellar luxation.
