Beagle

The Beagle is a compact British scent hound developed in the United Kingdom to pursue small game such as hare.

Small tracking hounds existed across England for centuries, with records from the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I noting miniature versions small enough to fit inside hunting pockets. Selective breeding refined the modern hound during the 1870s, leading to official acceptance by The Kennel Club in 1890 and the American Kennel Club in 1885. Within the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the breed belongs to Group 6, Section 1.3 for small-sized scent hounds. It gained international prominence through pack hunting, pet ownership, and biosecurity roles such as airport agricultural inspection.

The standard describes a sturdy, evenly balanced hound measuring between 33 and 40 cm (13-16 in) at the withers, with adult weights typically ranging from 9 to 14 kg (20-31 lb). Its short, dense coat is weatherproof, appearing in various traditional hound shades such as tricolour, lemon and white, and blue, white, and tan, with the breed standard requiring a white tip on the stern. The official standard defines its temperament as amiable, alert, bold, and energetic, showing neither aggression nor timidity while retaining strong tracking stamina.

Care requirements center on daily exercise and mental enrichment through scent work, alongside weekly coat brushing and ear cleaning. The drooping ear conformation creates susceptibility to ear infections, and hounds have an inclination toward obesity if nutrition is not monitored. Breed health schemes also recommend genetic and diagnostic screening for epilepsy, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and Musladin-Lueke syndrome.
