Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog is an agile herding dog bred in the rugged Shetland Islands of Scotland to protect and manage livestock. Croft farmers crossed indigenous pastoral spitz dogs with working collies, establishing the Shetland Collie Club in Lerwick in 1908.

The Kennel Club in London recognized the breed in 1914, and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale assigns it to Group 1 under Sheepdogs and Cattledogs (except Swiss Cattledogs). Ideal height at the withers is 37 cm (14.5 in) for males and 35.5 cm (14 in) for females, with weight generally between 6.5-11 kg (14-24 lb). The body is lithe, showing a wedge-shaped head, semi-erect ears with forward-folding tips, and an abundant frill.

The FCI standard defines its temperament as alert, gentle, intelligent, and strong, showing deep devotion to its owner alongside reserve toward strangers without timidity. Its double coat combines a harsh, straight, long outer coat with a short, soft, dense undercoat. Official colorations encompass sable, tricolour, blue merle, black and white, and black and tan, frequently embellished with clean white markings.

Providing mental engagement through agility, tracking, or obedience exercises helps satisfy high intelligence and curtail nuisance barking. Line-brushing the double coat down to the skin twice a week prevents matting behind the ears and around leg feathering. Frequent genetic health screenings assess Collie eye anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy, MDR1 gene drug sensitivity, hip dysplasia, and von Willebrand disease.
