Pembroke Welsh Corgi
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a low-set cattle herding breed that originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Historical records trace the breed's working roots to medieval Wales, where local farmers employed agile dwarf drovers to nip at the heels of cattle and avoid retaliatory kicks beneath herd lines. The Kennel Club recognized Welsh Corgis in 1925, originally grouping Pembroke and Cardigan varieties together until granting them independent breed status in 1934. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale established definitive recognition for the breed in 1963, placing it in the Sheepdogs and Cattledogs group. British royal patronage began in 1933 when King George VI introduced puppies to his household, establishing a multi-generational association with Queen Elizabeth II.
The official breed standard defines the dog as sturdily built and active, standing approximately 25-30 cm (10-12 in) at the withers. Mature males carry a weight of 10-12 kg (22-26 lb), while mature females weigh 9-11 kg (20-24 lb). The head displays a distinct foxy outline with erect ears and an intelligent gaze. Its medium-length double coat comprises a coarse, weather-resistant outer layer and a dense insulating undercoat. Permitted breed standard coat colours include uniform shades of red, sable, fawn, and black and tan, often appearing with clear white markings along the neck, chest, and limbs.
The standard describes the Pembroke as bold in outlook, workmanlike, outgoing, and friendly, without showing nervousness or aggression. Daily physical exercise and mental stimulation keep its working instincts engaged in domestic environments. Regular brushing manages weekly shedding, with thorough daily grooming required during seasonal spring and autumn coat blowouts. Notable genetic conditions affecting the breed include canine degenerative myelopathy, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and intervertebral disc disease stemming from its elongated spinal conformation.
