Newfoundland
The Newfoundland is a giant working dog developed on the Canadian island of Newfoundland.
European fishermen visiting eastern Canadian waters during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries crossed indigenous working canines with continental working stock. These maritime dogs hauled loaded timber carts on land, retrieved lost fishing gear, pulled fishing nets through icy waters, and rescued sailors thrown overboard into heavy surf. The Kennel Club recognized the breed during the nineteenth century, and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale catalogued it under Group 2 among molossoid mountain breeds. A famous nineteenth-century historical specimen named Boatswain inspired English poet Lord Byron to compose an elegy in 1808 commemorating the dog's exceptional loyalty.
Mature males reach an average height of 71 cm (28 in) at the withers and an approximate weight of 68 kg (150 lb). Females measure an average height of 66 cm (26 in) and weigh roughly 54 kg (119 lb). The anatomy includes a broad skull, deep muzzle, webbed feet designed for aquatic propulsion, and heavy bone framing. A flat, water-resistant double coat features a coarse, moderately long outer layer and a soft undercoat. Traditional colour varieties include uniform black, solid dark brown, and the piebald white and black pattern known historically as the Landseer coat.
The standard describes its expression as reflecting benevolence and serenity, emphasizing a dignified, gentle, and docile temperament without shyness or aggression. Proper physical care calls for moderate daily exercise, access to swimming when available, and thorough weekly brushing of the thick undercoat. Routine maintenance requires special attention to avoid matting behind the ears and feathering on the limbs. Common veterinary health concerns encompass canine hip and elbow dysplasia, subvalvular aortic stenosis, cystinuria, and gastric dilatation-volvulus due to its deep thoracic cavity.
