Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is a small Franco-Belgian companion dog originating in the Mediterranean region during the Renaissance.
Sailors transported early ancestors known as Barbichons across maritime routes, and these dogs gained favor among royal courts throughout Italy, Spain, and France. After the French Revolution curtailed aristocratic patronage, the canines worked alongside street performers and circus acts. Franco-Belgian breeders rescued the breed after twentieth-century wartime declines, leading to registration of the first dog, Pitou, in 1932 in Belgium and definitive recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1959. Under the FCI classification system, it belongs to Group 9, Section 1.1 for Bichons.
According to the official breed standard, height at the withers spans 25 to 29 cm (10-11 in), with an approximate body weight of 5 kg (11 lb). The coat consists of fine, silky hair that forms loose corkscrew curls measuring 7 to 10 cm (3-4 in) in length, completely pure white after twelve months of age. The breed standard characterizes its temperament as cheerful, sociable toward people and other animals, adaptable, and affectionate toward its owners, rarely barking without cause.
Daily combing and professional clipping every four to six weeks prevent the non-shedding curly coat from forming painful mats near the skin. Daily walks and indoor play satisfy exercise requirements, though companion-oriented traits require managing separation stress. Common medical vulnerabilities documented across veterinary surveys and health panels include patellar luxation, periodontal disease, cataracts, and gallbladder disorders.
