Belgian Malinois
The Belgian Malinois is an athletic herding dog originating from the Mechelen countryside in northwestern Belgium.
Veterinary professor Adolphe Reul organized local sheep handlers at Cureghem in 1891 to classify indigenous pastoral dogs into defined regional varieties. Breeders around Mechelen selected short-haired fawn dogs with dark face masks, establishing foundation studs like Tomy in the late 1890s. Ghent police forces introduced these dogs to patrol duties in 1899, establishing an international working precedent. The American Kennel Club granted individual breed status to the variety in 1959, separating it from other Belgian shepherds.
Classified under Group 1, Section 1 by the Federation Cynologique Internationale as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd Dog, males measure 60 to 66 centimeters (24 to 26 inches) at the withers and females 56 to 62 centimeters (22 to 24 inches), with body weights spanning 20 to 30 kilograms (44 to 66 pounds). The short double coat is rich fawn with a charcoal black overlay and a pronounced black mask covering the muzzle and eye rims. The breed standard outlines a vigilant, highly driven, and confident guardian that remains calm, fearless, and intensely responsive to handler commands.
Grooming involves regular brushing, which increases during twice-yearly seasonal shedding cycles, paired with rigorous daily mental engagement and strenuous exercise to channel high working drive. The breed is relatively robust, but recognized health considerations include hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, and progressive retinal atrophy. Military and police units in many countries use the Malinois as a service dog.
