Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhound is a giant sighthound native to Ireland, where its ancestors hunted big game since antiquity.

Historical accounts place large coursing hounds in Ireland during the first century, with a Roman consular letter referencing them in 391. Irish chieftains employed these animals to pursue wolves, wild boar, and Irish elk, while also presenting pairs as gifts to European monarchs. When wolf populations collapsed across the British Isles during the late eighteenth century, the hunting breed faced near extinction. British army captain George Augustus Graham launched a preservation program in 1862, crossing remaining specimens with Scottish Deerhounds, Great Danes, and Borzois to reconstruct the foundation stock in 1885.

Assigned to FCI Group 10 under Section 2 for rough-haired sighthounds, the breed standard specifies an average height of 81-86 cm (32-34 in) for adult males. Minimum measurements mandate a shoulder height of 79 cm (31 in) and a mass of 54.5 kg (120 lb) for males, alongside 71 cm (28 in) and 40.5 kg (89 lb) for females. The breed standard describes its nature as gentle, calm, and friendly, summarized by an old Irish adage as lambs at home and lions in the chase. The weather-resistant double coat is harsh and rough on the torso and legs, forming wiry brows and a beard in grey, brindle, red, black, pure white, or fawn.

Grooming requires weekly combing of the rough coat to prevent matting, accompanied by regular ear cleaning and nail trimming. As deep-chested giant hounds, they require controlled, low-impact exercise during their rapid skeletal development throughout the initial twelve months. Common breed health conditions include gastric dilatation-volvulus, dilated cardiomyopathy, osteosarcoma, and hip dysplasia. The typical lifespan of six to eight years is among the shortest of all dog breeds.
