Cocker Spaniel
The Cocker Spaniel is a British gundog breed developed across the United Kingdom to flush Eurasian woodcock from dense thickets and undergrowth. Derived from medieval land spaniels described in fourteenth-century hunting treatises, the breed gained official separation from larger springer spaniels in 1892 through The Kennel Club in London. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale categorizes the dog in Group 8 under Flushing Dogs.
The first dedicated breed club formed in 1902, establishing standardized morphological criteria for show and field performance. Adult males measure between 39 and 41 centimeters (15 to 16 inches) at the withers, whereas females measure between 38 and 39 centimeters (about 15 inches). Average body weight ranges from 13 to 14.5 kilograms (29 to 32 pounds). The physical structure exhibits a compact, square profile with a deep brisket, short loin, and strong bone substance. Low-set lobular ears feature fine leathers reaching the tip of the nose, and the tail remains carried level with the backline during purposeful ground search.
The coat lies flat and silky across the frame without curliness or wiry stiffness, accented by feathered fringes along the chest, abdomen, legs, and tail. Color patterns encompass solid shades of black, red, golden, and liver, alongside particolor combinations of black and white, liver and white, and blue or orange roans. Standard criteria define the temperament by an inherently merry disposition, characterized by an energetic bustling gait and constantly wagging tail while tracking scent trails. The dog demonstrates gentle affection toward people alongside fearless determination when working through dense vegetation.
Pendulous ear conformation limits airflow within the auditory canal, producing warm moisture that makes chronic otitis externa a frequent medical concern requiring routine ear cleansing and drying. Genetic screenings target progressive retinal atrophy, familial nephropathy, and adult-onset neuropathy. The high energy levels of a working gundog necessitate daily vigorous physical outings, including off-leash running and retrieval exercises, to prevent excess weight gain. Regular coat grooming requires thorough combing every few days to eliminate burrs from feathering, supplemented by periodic scissor trimming around paw pads and ear margins.
