Chihuahua

The Chihuahua is a Mexican toy companion dog breed originating in the state of Chihuahua and documented since the middle of the nineteenth century. Archaeological findings link its ancestry to the Techichi, a small canine kept by the Toltec civilization from the ninth century onward. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale classifies the breed under Group 9, designated for Companion and Toy Dogs.

Breed standards place primary structural importance on weight rather than standing height at the withers. The official federation standard specifies an ideal body weight between 1.5 and 3.0 kilograms (3.3 to 6.6 pounds), while tolerating individuals weighing between 500 grams and 1.5 kilograms (1.1 to 3.3 pounds). Standing height usually spans 15 to 23 centimeters (6 to 9 inches). The physical silhouette exhibits a compact frame, an apple-shaped cranial dome, large upright ears flaring at approximately forty-five degrees, and a moderately long tail carried high in an arched sickle curve over the level topline without curling beneath the dorsal plane.

Two separate varieties exist within the breed: the smooth-haired and the long-haired Chihuahua. The smooth variety possesses short, close-fitting, glossy hair, whereas the long-haired variety displays a soft, fine texture with feathering on the ears, legs, pants, and a full plumed tail. All colors, shades, and combinations are permissible under international standards, with the sole exception of the merle pattern. The breed standard characterizes the temperament as quick, alert, lively, and remarkably courageous, showing spirited self-confidence, acute vigilance toward strange sounds, and dedicated loyalty toward household members.

Due to their small jaw size, these dogs frequently experience dental overcrowding and premature tartar accumulation, requiring regular teeth brushing and veterinary dental cleanings. Other recognized medical conditions include patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, mitral valve disease, and juvenile hypoglycemia. The breed possesses minimal insulating subcutaneous fat, rendering individuals sensitive to low ambient temperatures and damp weather. Maintenance requires indoor sheltering, protective coats in freezing conditions, and modest exercise needs fulfilled by short daily walks and interactive indoor games, supplemented by gentle weekly coat brushing.
