Shar Pei
The Shar Pei is an ancient multipurpose farm and hunting dog originating in Guangdong province, southern China, during the Han dynasty. Archaeological excavations dating to 200 BC reveal pottery figures displaying the wrinkled skin and square silhouette of the breed.
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale classifies the breed under Group 2, Section 2.1, designating Molossian dogs. Chinese agriculturalists utilized the breed for tracking wild boar, guarding rural properties, and managing cattle. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, heavy pet taxation and agrarian restructuring drastically depleted canine populations across the mainland. In 1973, Hong Kong breeder Matgo Law published an international appeal in an American magazine to preserve the remaining bloodlines, prompting the export of breeding pairs that re-established the global registry. The American Kennel Club formally registered the breed in 1992.
Adult height at the withers ranges from 44-51 cm (17.5-20 in), accompanied by an average body weight of 18-29 kg (40-65 lb). Defining anatomical markers include a broad muzzle resembling a hippopotamus, small sunken eyes, folded triangular ears, and a tongue with blue-black pigmentation. The coat is short, harsh, and straight, standing off from the skin without an undercoat. Recognized texture variants include the horse coat, measuring under 1.2 cm (0.5 in), and the brush coat, reaching up to 2.5 cm (1 in). Breed standards define the temperament as independent, calm, devoted, and reserved toward strangers.
Grooming requires regular weekly brushing and thorough drying between cutaneous folds following baths or rain exposure to avert microbial proliferation. Narrow ear canals and folded ear pinnae require routine monitoring to prevent chronic otitis externa. The excessive folding results from elevated dermal hyaluronic acid synthesis driven by a duplication upstream of the HAS2 gene. This genetic mutation associates directly with Shar-Pei autoinflammatory disease, an episodic fever disorder producing swollen hock syndrome and renal amyloidosis. Ophthalmic disorders remain prevalent, with neonates frequently undergoing surgical eyelid tacking to treat congenital entropion and protect corneal tissue.
