Pug

The Pug is a small brachycephalic companion dog originating in ancient China during the Han dynasty before 200 BC. Chinese imperial courts maintained these flat-faced dogs as luxury pets, housing them in guarded quarters and reserving their ownership for royalty.

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale classifies the breed in Group 9, Section 11, covering small Molossian dogs. Dutch East India Company merchants transported specimens from China to Europe during the late sixteenth century. The canine became the official emblem of the Dutch House of Orange after an individual dog named Pompey reportedly alerted Prince William the Silent to approaching Spanish assassins in 1572. British soldiers returning from the Siege of Beijing in 1860 brought refined palace strains back to England, which breeders integrated to establish modern kennel club registrations.

The breed standard summarizes the physical conformation as multum in parvo, meaning much substance in a compact frame. Desirable weight ranges from 6.3-8.1 kg (14-18 lb), with withers height typically measuring 25-30 cm (10-12 in). The body displays a cobby build, wide chest, and a tightly curled tail carried over the hip. The coat is fine, smooth, short, and glossy, appearing in silver, apricot, fawn, or pure black, accompanied by distinct black masks, trace lines down the spine, and ear pigmentation. Standards describe the temperament as even-tempered, charming, dignified, and playful.

Care routines focus heavily on facial hygiene, as the deep skin folds across the nasal bridge gather secretions that cause fold dermatitis if not swabbed dry daily. The shortened craniofacial anatomy causes brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, which limits heat dissipation through panting and impairs breathing during vigorous exertion. Ocular conditions occur with high frequency, including corneal ulcerations, pigmentary keratitis, and entropion, due to shallow orbits and prominent globes. The breed also displays unique vulnerability to necrotizing meningoencephalitis, an idiopathic inflammatory brain disease characterized by fatal seizures.
