French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a compact companion dog developed in nineteenth-century Paris.

Lacemakers from central England brought toy bulldogs across the English Channel to Normandy and Paris during the Industrial Revolution around the 1850s and 1860s. Parisian workers, coachmen, and tradespeople crossed these miniature imports with local ratters and terriers. This selective breeding yielded a muscular companion with distinctive upright bat ears and a shortened face. Canine fanciers created the first breed club in Paris in 1880, and the initial standard was established in 1898 when the Société Centrale Canine recognized the variety.

Categorized within the FCI Companion and Toy Dogs group, the breed possesses a compact, heavy-boned body with a naturally short tail. Males reach 27-35 cm (11-14 in) in height and weigh 9-14 kg (20-31 lb), while females stand 24-32 cm (9.5-12.5 in) and weigh 8-13 kg (18-29 lb). The coat is short, glossy, close, and smooth, appearing in shades of fawn, brindle, or pied combinations. Breed standards define the temperament as sociable, lively, playful, affectionate, and possessive.

Care routines require periodic bathing alongside meticulous cleaning of the facial skin wrinkles to prevent moisture-induced bacterial infections. Modest daily walking suffices for exercise, though owners must prevent strenuous activity in warm temperatures due to brachycephalic heat vulnerability. Frequent health complications involve brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome, hemivertebrae, intervertebral disc disease, and skin allergies. Prospective parent screening assists in reducing spinal malformations, breathing difficulties, and ocular complications.
