Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute is an Arctic sledge dog bred by the Mahlemut Inupiaq people of northwestern Alaska to haul heavy freight.
Indigenous hunters relied on these heavy sled dogs for centuries to transport goods, haul seal carcasses, and withstand sub-zero polar blizzards. During the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896, prospectors crossbred native stock with outside breeds, but isolated indigenous settlements preserved ancestral bloodlines. The American Kennel Club formally registered the Malamute in 1935, followed by definitive recognition from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale in 1960 under Group 5 (Spitz and Primitive Types, Nordic Sledge Dogs). The breed also takes part in recreational mushing, skijoring, and weight-pulling competitions.
The standard targets a freighting size of 64 cm (25 in) at the withers and 39 kg (86 lb) for males, compared to 58 cm (23 in) and 34 kg (75 lb) for females. The heavy coat features a thick, coarse guard layer guarding a woolly undercoat, seen in shades of gray, black, sable, or red combined with white, with all-white being the only solid pattern. The breed standard describes an affectionate, friendly disposition; it is not a one-person dog, displaying high sociability toward people but marked independence. Due to pack hierarchy traits, dogs often exhibit notable prey drive toward small game.
Owners must commit to ninety minutes of vigorous daily activity to expend the breed's abundant endurance and deter escape behavior. Grooming involves raking the thick undercoat weekly, escalating to intensive daily brushing when the coat blows seasonally. Hereditary medical concerns documented by breed registries include canine hip dysplasia, day blindness (hemeralopia), inherited polyneuropathy, and chondrodysplasia.
