Akita
The Akita is a spitz dog breed developed in the mountainous northern prefectures of Honshu, Japan, dating back to the seventeenth century.
From 1603 onward, medium-sized hunting canines known as Akita Matagis tracked bear, boar, and deer across the harsh terrain of Akita Prefecture. Beginning in 1868, local breeders outcrossed these animals with mastiffs and Tosas to produce larger fighting dogs. In 1931, the Japanese government proclaimed the Akita a Natural Monument of Japan to preserve native lines. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale recognized the breed on a definitive basis in 1964, assigning it to Group 5 (Spitz and Primitive Types). An official split by the FCI established the Japanese Akita and the American Akita as two separate breeds in 2000.
Under FCI standard 255, preferred height at the withers is 67 cm (26 in) for males and 61 cm (24 in) for females, with an allowance of 3 cm (1 in) in either direction; adult weight typically ranges from 30 to 45 kg (66-99 lb). The harsh, straight outer coat covers a dense, plush undercoat, appearing in red fawn, sesame, brindle, or pure white. All colorations except solid white must display urajiro, which consists of pale whitish shading across the cheeks, muzzle, chest, belly, tail, and inner legs. Official standards describe the Akita's temperament as composed, faithful, docile, and receptive, demonstrating quiet dignity alongside a strong protective drive toward its family.
Care requirements center on weekly brushing that transitions into daily grooming during seasonal undercoat shedding cycles. Moderate daily walking satisfies exercise needs, though early socialization remains vital given the breed's natural wariness of unfamiliar people and same-sex conspecifics. Recognized health predispositions include gastric dilatation-volvulus, hip dysplasia, autoimmune thyroiditis, and sebaceous adenitis.
